Abraham Lincoln needed votes. In January of 1864, as the Civil War raged on, the president was gearing up for a re-election campaign, believing his loss was imminent. But in order to unify the shattered pieces of the nation and abolish slavery, he needed four more years. With more time, he could end slavery with a law, but that law needed votes, which, by his own count, he knew he didn’t have.

Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln

On the evening of April 14, 1865, while attending a special performance of the comedy, "Our American Cousin," President Abraham Lincoln was shot. Accompanying him at Ford's Theatre that night were his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, a twenty-eight year-old officer named Major Henry R. Rathbone, and Rathbone's fiancée, Clara Harris. After the play was in progress, a figure with a drawn derringer pistol stepped into the presidential box, aimed, and fired. The president slumped forward.

Labor Day has come to mean two different things in our country, a day to honor the working man and the last three-day weekend of summer. Both are great reasons to celebrate!

Coming from a family of hard workers, I appreciate the day in their honor. Our country was built by these people! My grandfather toiled each day on the railroad, and my father spent over thirty years building automobiles. I’m grateful to have been taught their strong work ethic and to have learned the satisfaction that a hard days work brings.

I have been told in the past, that I have a one track mind. That I am like a bull dog and when I dig my teeth into a project, I do not let go until that project is finished. And while I wear many hats here at U.S. Legacies, whatever project I tackle first thing I the morning, that is the project that I attempt to finish before moving on. This technique keeps my nose to the grindstone and many times I get so absorbed in whatever project I am working on, that I become totally oblivious to other things that need tending to.

Life is just a yummy plate of garden vegetables. Yes, it sounds corny, but I’ve always found comfort in the simple truth of this metaphor. Tasty, homegrown vegetables from my garden remind me of the beauty, joy, and serenity, which more than compensates for all the hard work, muscle strain, pest and diseases encountered along the way.

As I sit contemplating my research from last year, I can truly state that I had a very good year!! How about all of you?? When it comes to studying your families, it's always good to have a goal for each year. That helps to keep you focused amidst all the sidelines you may venture into during your research. It's very important to keep good, organized notes, so you don't have to retrace your steps and make extra work for yourself.

Fashion is often thought to be the defining quality of a generation. But the dinner table can give just as many clues about a period in time as clothing. Sweet and savory gelatin-based foods were as characteristic of the 1960s as bell bottoms, go-go boots, and drop-waist dresses. Low-fat diets and farm-to-table foods represented the '70s as much as peasant blouses, military surplus clothes, and frayed jeans.

"Old Soldiers Never Die"

Gen. Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) was one of most prominent United States military figures of the first half of the twentieth century.

In World War I he served as chief of staff of the Forty-second Infantry (Rainbow) Division and later commanded one of its brigades. He was twice wounded and received many decorations for bravery.

In April of 1943, at the age of 18 my father, Franklin Thomas Wike, left his job as a soda jerk at a local drug store in Lebanon, PA and joined the Army. I have no idea what his expectations or fears were the day he was inducted into the Army, but the price he would pay, for our freedom would have a major effect on his life, as well as the lives of many others.

In most schools, history is generally taught by geographical region or theme. For example, an ancient history class is usually broken down into the histories of different areas (Greece, Rome, Egypt, Eastern Asia, etc.), and art history is taught totally separate from political history. While this sort of system may make it easier for students to retain information, it also results in most people having a pretty warped sense of history.

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life."

The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So why is the groom wearing black?"

There is a moment after the new year when the questions that come into my mailbox are about cleaning things. Up until then most are about foods. Then something ticks over and the main area of inquiry is "How do I get this out?"

In 1942 a young John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) entered the United States Navy eager to see action in World War II.

Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987), playwright, diplomat, wife of Time-Life, Inc., publisher Henry Robinson Luce (1898-1967), and a Republican member of the House of Representatives from Connecticut, knew the Kennedy family well. She sent the young naval officer a good luck coin that had originally belonged to her mother. Kennedy thanked Luce for her thoughtfulness and promised to clip the coin to his military identification tags.

One of the military innovations of World War I was the emergence of the armored tank. George S. Patton, Jr. (1885-1945), was the first American officer assigned to the fledgling United States Tank Corps in 1917.

He continued to champion the tank in the interwar years when the money-short army largely neglected the corps.

Melt chocolate in double boiler
