When my Virginian ancestors came west over the Oregon Trail in 1850, they relied on the wisdom and citizenship of good neighbors who were always willing to share what they knew with their fellow pioneers. I am fortunate to have the detailed and well-maintained diary of my great-great grandmother, Florence Tyler Grice (1829-1904) that is in and of itself, a rich, colorful history of a settler’s life in what is now Marion County Oregon.

Greene, Morgan and Putnam Counties in Georgia are all named after Revolutionary War heroes. This story of General Daniel Morgan is the third of a three-part series. Eight other US counties were named for General Morgan. Morgan was one of the sources for the fictional Benjamin Martin character in the recent movie The Patriot. Morgan County was formed from Baldwin County in 1807.

“Uncle Karl” (Karl Grady Bradley), “Nunkie” (Foster Key Bradley) and “Mammie” (Zula Zong Foster Bradley) bought 2013 Claredon Avenue, Bessmer, the former Lefkovits home, in 1919. The Lefkovits were slow in vacating and Mammie finally told them they would have to move upstairs because they were moving in downstairs. The Lefkovits left the premises.

Minnie Ruth Kelly/Lewis/Marshburn/Leggett (my grandma) was born on October 18, 1915 in Bladenboro, North Carolina, and in my humble opinion, she was the greatest woman that the Good Lord ever saw fit to grace this fine Earth. Being the oldest of her twenty-one grandchildren, I feel blessed to be able to be the one to tell the world about this wonderful, Christian woman.

When Herschel Nix started the first grade, he was 8½-years-old and towered over his younger classmates.
It wasn't long, however, until the principal of the two-room brick schoolhouse realized that Herschel surpassed the other first graders not only in height, but in his ABCs and 1-2-3s, too.

Franz Joseph Gutgsell (n. 17? d. 14 Nov 1821) and Agatha Dschle (n. 17? d. 13 Feb 1826), Franz and Agatha were married 24 May 1819. They resided at house Nr. 79 in Pfaffenweiler, Breisgau, Germany. According to Fritz Gutgsell, current Bruegermeister of Pfaffenweiler, house Nr 79 still stands.
