MaParker’s Apple Crisp

Newtonwille, Indiana

 

5 6 cup chopped apples

1 cup flour

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 egg1/3 cup melted butter

cinnamon

 

Directions:

Mix flour, sugar and baking powder and crumble over apples.

Take 1/3 cup melted butter Pour over top.

Sprinkle with cinnamon.

Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees.

Strawberry Jello

1 large box Strawberry jello

2 c boiling water

2 pints frozen strawberries

3 bananas diced

1 large can crushed pineapple

2 boxes sour cream

Nuts

 

Directions:

Dissolve Jello in boiling water. Add frozen strawberries and stir until Jello begins to thicken. Add bananas, pineapple and nuts. Pour of mixture into bowl. Spread with sour cream. Pour balance of mixture over cream and refrigerate until set.

Glazed Apple Cookies

cup butter

1 cup brown sugar

1 egg

2 cup flour

1 t baking soda

1 t salt

1 cup finely chopped apples

1 t cinnamon

1 t ground cloves

1 t nutmeg

1 cup milk

1 cup raisins

1 cup ground pecans

 

Directions:

Bake 12 minutes at 400 degrees.

 

Glaze:

1 1/2 c sifted powdered sugar

1 T butter

1 t vanilla

2 T milk

Pineapple Squares

1 cup butter

3 cups flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 lemon rind

1 cup sugar

1 tsp salt

2 egg yolks

1 cup sour cream

1 cup pineapple preserves & also add crushed pineapple

1 cup chopped nuts

 

Mix butter and flour like pie crust, add sugar, baking soda, lemon rind, egg yolks, salt & sour cream. Mix together. Take 2/3 of the dough & press down in the cookie sheet. Put pineapple filling on top. Rest of the dough use to cut the stripes & put on top of the dough. Put chopped nuts & powdered sugar when cool.

 

Bake 350 35 min.

Mrs Krieder’s Canning Corn

14 cups corn

1 cup water

1 cup salt

1 cup sugar

 

Directions:

Mix it well and work it good.

 

Boil 15 minutes.

 

This recipe came from a collection of over 200 handwritten recipes inherited from Lizzie Fink Hostetter nee Long, who was PA Dutch and spent over 40 years as a cook for the United Christian Church Campmeetings in Lebanon County, PA. We have no idea who Mrs. Kreider was but there was a Mr & Mrs Harry Kreider & son, Mr George Kreider, Mrs. Katie Kreider, Elizabeth Kreider, Mr & Mrs Ammon S. Kreider & Son that attended the funeral for Lizzies husband, Harvey Hostetter in 1955. There was also a Katie & Betty Kreider and Rufus E. Kreider that attended Lizzies funeral in 1961.

Tempting Turkey Casserole

1-8oz. Jar Cheez Whiz

1 cup milk

7 oz spaghetti, broken into thirds, cooked, drained

2 tablespoon butter

1-10oz pkg chopped broccoli, cooked & drained

1 cup chopped cooked turkey

1-4 oz can mushrooms, drained

1 teaspoon poultry seasoning

1 teaspoon onion salt

 

Directions:

Combine cheese & milk. Mix well. Toss spaghetti with margarine. Combine all ingredients. Mix well. Spoon into 2 qt casserole.

 

Cover and bake @ 350 for 30 to 35 minutes or until hot.

 

Stir before serving. 6 servings.

PA Dutch Chestnut Stuffing

1 quart chestnuts

1 pint bread crumbs

1 cup shortening (butter, chicken fat or lard)

1 teaspoon salt

1 egg, well beaten

1 cup chopped celery

2 teaspoons poultry seasoning

 

Directions:

Make a gash in each chestnut, place in an iron skillet with 1 tablespoon of butter and shake over hot flame for a few minutes. Place in the oven for 10 minutes. Then remove the shell and skins. Cover the blanched chestnuts with boiling salt water and cook until tender. Strain and put through a ricer. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.

Roast Turkey with Chestnut Filling

turkey

1 cup shortening

1 cup of flour

salt

 

Directions:

Dress and clean turkey and fill with Chestnut stuffing as per instructions below.

 

Cream together shortening and flour and rub the legs, breast and wings. Place in roasting pan, cover tightly and place in a hot oven (400) for 15 minutes. Season with salt. Reduce the heat to moderate (350) and finish roasting for 3 hours or until tender.
