Follow-up to WH Howard
From Milton Long
As a follow-up on the article about WH Howard in the February issue of the U. S Legacies, I was able to furnish this picture of WH, which I took of him in the Seigfried line in January 1945. I provided the family with information about our unit and the part WH played in winning the war.
WH came home, married and went to law school and later became a judge. He died in 1986. Thanks for sending me the e-mail and their request.

Car Memories
From Doc Ellis
I remember two cars my dad had...the first was a 1933 (not sure of that date) Essex...it was a green 3-door sedan...two doors up front and one in the back and on the right/passenger side. Also remember two crystal urns on the inner door posts in which mom would put artificial flowers...the second was a car he bought used...after a two-weeks free trial from the lot...a 1929 LaSalle Phaeton sedan...best described as a convertibled limousine sedan...there was a panel and glass windshield between the front and back seats...don’t know what Pop paid for the Essex, but do know he paid $200 for the LaSalle...we lived in a suburb of Los Angeles at the time, 1935-36...the suburb? A place called Hollywood...MY first car was a 1938 Ford coupe which I bought for $480 when I came home TO ST. LOUIS from WW2 in October 1945...drove it until I re-enlisted (in the Regular Army of all places) in 1947.

More Car Memories
From Bernie
Going back as far as I can remember, (probably late 20s or early thirties) my father bought a 1925 Studebaker for $10. It hadn’t been on the road for a long time. But my father was handy and, after towing it home, he worked on it for a few days and it was good transportation.

GREGORY A. LONG LTC USAR
From Milton Long
Frank, I thought you might like to see a picture of my son Gregory that lives in Wooster Ohio. He runs a CPA firm and served 20 years in the Army Reserve. He is also a Lt. Colonel. Damn, he wanted to out rank me and didn’t do it. He is very active in the Boy Scouts and the business world. He graduated from Kent State University and was in school at the time of the shootings. His last staff position in the military was with the US 83rd ARCOM in Columbus, Ohio.

Please respond if you know anyone who was on the U.S.S Thurston. My grandfather was board the ship, and I just want to know more information.

1950Army Days
From Harvey Wike
Enclosed are some pictures taken back on the farm in Fredericksburg, PA when I first went into the Army in 1950. Notice I was wearing an Ike jacket like your dad wore. On the newspaper article about the tower, I have been there and seen that tower many times. It is located at the main part of the post which most units go to for field training. Before I retired from the Army, our unit would fly over there for six months of field training there. I spent a total of six years on and off training there. I thought it might be interesting to you. The first time I was there was in 1950.
