January 15, 1895

Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premieres in St. Petersburg, Russia.

 

January 24, 1895

While imprisoned in Iolani Palace, Queen Liliuokalani is forced by representatives of the Republic of Hawaii to officially abdicate her throne.

 

January 9, 1905

Known as Bloody Sunday. The Russian Revolution of 1905-1907 begins when strikers marching to petition Czar Nicholas are fired upon by the Czars troops in front of the Winter Palace.

 

January 10, 1905

The Japanese simultaneously declare war on Russia and attack Port Arthur from the sea.

 

January 28, 1915

An Act of the United States Congress creates the United States Coast Guard.

 

January 31, 1915

The Germans use poison gas on the Russians during World War I.

 

January 3, 1925

Benito Mussolini announces he is taking dictatorial powers over Italy.

 

January 5, 1925

Nellie Tayloe Ross, when elected governor of Wyoming, becomes the first female governor in the United States. She died in 1977 at the age of 101.

 

January 11, 1935

Amelia Earhart becomes the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California. She was the first woman to receive a pilots license from the FAI. In 1937, when she disappeared, the United States

government spent $4 million looking for Earhart, which made it the most costly and intensive air and sea search in history at that time.

 

January 16, 1935

United States rejects membership in the World Court. Despite the urging of President Franklin Roosevelt the Senate fails to ratify the World Court Treaty by a vote of 52 – 35.

 

January 7, 1945

British General Bernard Montgomery holds press conference taking credit for the victory in the Battle of Bulge.

 

January 16, 1945

Adolf Hitler moves into his underground bunker known as Fuhrerbunker.

 

January 27, 1945

The Russians arrive at Auschwitz death camp and liberate 7,000 prisoners.

 

January 30, 1945

121 Army Rangers from the 6th Battalion enter Japanese prison camp at Cabanatuann and liberate Allied POWs.

 

January 31, 1945

General Eisenhower orders the execution by firing squad of deserter Eddie Slovik. Eddie is the first American soldier to be executed for desertion since the Civil War, and has been the last. He was executed in the village of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mins, France.

 

January 19, 1955

Press conference given by President Eisenhower is the first to be taped and then aired on television.

Scrabble board game debuts.

 

January 20, 1955

First Atomic submarine, the USS Nautilus, is launched at Groton, Connecticut.

 

January 25, 1955

Russia ends state of war with Germany.

January 4, 1965

President Lyndon Johnson first introduces the Great Society concept during his State of the Union address.

 

January 19, 1965

Lawyer Julius Chambers, with Plaintiffs Rev. Darius Swann and his wife Vera, files a class action suit to de-segregate the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system in North Carolina. The suit is dismissed by a federal judge.

 

January 20, 1965

President Lyndon Johnson is inaugurated as 36th President of the United States.

 

January 24, 1965

Sir Winston Churchill dies at the age of 90 due to complications from a stroke.
