The history of Mother’s Day: The celebration of Mother’s Day, started by different names in other counties, dates back hundreds of years. Gifts of cakes and small trinkets were given in honor of these Mother’s.
In the United States, Anna Jarvis is credited with originating our first Mother’s Day holiday. She was a poor Appalachian homemaker. She organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions of her community. She thought the day would be best advocated by Mother’s and called it Mother’s workday. She died in 1905.
Her daughter, also called Anna, never married and was extremely attached to her Mother. She began lobbying politicians to support a day dedicated to Mother’s. Anna talked to Presidents Taft and Roosevelt hoping they would support her campaign.
Anna organized a church service in 1908 to celebrate her Mother. She handed out white carnations, her Mother’s favorite flower. In 1913 The House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials to wear white carnations on the day many were calling Mother’s Day, the second Sunday in May.
May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s day. Telephone lines record their highest day of traffic on this special day.
