This is a collection of letters written home by George King, an American soldier who served in the Puerto Rican campaign during the Spanish-American War. At the outbreak of the War, King volunteered in the Sixth Regiment of Infantry formed in Concord, Massachusetts.

I never thought my childhood was unique. I was pretty much like almost every other kid I knew. I had two parents. A mom and a dad. I was different in the fact that I had all four grandparents and both sets of grandparents celebrated their 50 year wedding anniversary. I thought that was the way it was supposed to be.

1/2 tea spoon salt

1 table spoon sugar

1 egg

2 little cakes Fleishman’s yeast

1 1/2 tablespoons lard

1/2 pint luke warm water

Flour to stiffen. Don’t make to stiff. Use good flour.

Salt, sugar, beat egg.

Add yeast & lard to water.

Mix all together, then mix flour.

I have a 1908 cookbook my mother gave me. It lists an Acid Phosphate, as a solution of lime, magnesia, potash and iron. It was used for: Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Nervousness, Exhaustion, Headache, Tired Brain, Sleeplessness and a Delicious Drink. Jo Ann Wright nee Rochner

After many pleasant yours of ministering in a small North Carolina church, my grandfather, the Reverend Francis G. Bryans, passed away in May, 1985.

In the summer of 1996, I experienced a great deal of turmoil in my life. It became necessary for me to leave my job and take care of my health. I was depressed and anxious, and I felt very lost.

My family was living in Louisiana during WW II. Our sons, R.D. (Randolph Davis Prothro) and Jimmy (James Warren Prothro) went in the Army. R.D.'s daughter, Sarah Jane stayed with us for many months until the invasion of Germany during World War II while R.D. was in England and Sarah, his wife, was working in the civil service.

Now that I'm 'older' (but refuse to grow up), here's what I've discovered:

I. I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

2. My wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran.

3. I finally got my head together; now my body is falling apart.

4. Funny, I don't remember being absent minded...

A Timeline of WWI, the First Global Conflict

The devastation and scope of destruction brought about by World War I was unlike anything humanity had seen before. Known initially as the Great War, the conflict took place in various theaters spanning the globe, though the initial acts that instigated it and the treaties made at the war's end both originated in Europe.

It all started in 1942, during WWII. One year after firing on Pearl Harbor, a Japanese submarine approached the California coast and fired a blast of shells. The shells hit an oil field in Santa Barbara, near the Los Padres National Forest.

The Emancipation Proclamation and Thirteenth Amendment brought about by the Civil War were important milestones in the long process of ending legal slavery in the United States. This essay describes the development of those documents through various drafts by Lincoln and others and shows both the evolution of Abraham Lincoln’s thinking and his efforts to operate within the constitutional boundaries of the presidency.

Throughout the early 1860s, the Northern and Southern states held sustained disagreements on several key issues, including economic policies, cultural values, the power and reach of the federal government, and slavery. The latter issue was of paramount concern for the Southern states, whose economy was highly dependent on agriculture, unlike the more industrialized states of the North.

Fear

It was Franklin D. Roosevelt that said, “the only thing we have t fear is feat itself” in his inaugural address in 1933. The entire line goes “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”
