During the 1920s, several World War I "Bird" type minesweepers (AM) were assigned the mission of caring for the Navy's numerous seaplanes. They retained their AM series hull numbers for many years, but in January 1936 nine "Bird-Boats" were redesignated Small Seaplane Tenders and given new hull numbers ranging from AVP-1 through AVP-9.

I don’t know what category my stories would fit in. They are true things that have happened to me. They are not in any specific order.

Every time I visit my sister (Shirley) her grandchildren ask me to tell my ghost stories. I had planned to record them, but never got around to it. So I decided to record them with US Legacies. Then they can see them and read them any time they want.

Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Royds Pownall was born in 1887 as second son of of late C. A. W. Pownall, Blackheath.

He married in 1918 with Lucy Louttit Gray (died 1950), youngest daughter of late William Henderson, Aberdeen.

He was educated at Rugby School; Royal Military Academy, Woolwich; Staff College, Camberley and Imperial Defence College.

We’ve all heard that expression so many times, it almost sounds hollow- unless we’re old enough to actually remember “The Good Ole Days.” But what does it mean? Was life in the USA really better fifty or sixty years ago? Eighty years ago?

Rabbit or Squirrel Dressing

1 rabbit or squirrel, cut up
1 large pan of cornbread
Salt and Pepper to taste
1 Egg

Directions
Place rabbit or squirrel in large boiler, cover with water, boil until tender. Save water rabbit or squirrel was cooked in. Crumble cornbread in large bowl. Stir egg into cornbread.

She is a grown woman now with a husband and children of her own. I remember the Christmas in 1960 when she was ten days old. She came to us when misfortune and worry seemed to follow us. Her father had been injured early in the summer and had been unable to work for many months.

While searching for something to snack on the other day, I scrounged around in my kitchen cabinets and then opened the refrigerator. With three teenagers in the house, there wasn’t much to choose from inside the softly humming appliance; a small bowl of leftover broccoli, an empty carton of milk, a few eggs, two brown colored apples and one shriveled up orange.

I have a vague recollection of the times back in the early 1950's, when my brother and I would get to ride a train around 700 miles from our home in Pennsylvania to Chicago, without a parent or guardian to watch over us.

I was a very young boy at the time. I don't exactly remember how old I was when our train rides stopped, but I would guess they stopped when I was around 8 years old. The only reason I gave that age as a stopping point is because by the time I turned 10, we moved away from Pennsylvania.

Please read these directions and explanations first.

Boiling: Everything should be gently boiled, rather than boiled fast, in order to be tender. The water should never be allowed to stop boiling before the article is done. The kettle should be kept covered, merely raising the cover to remove the scum. When more water is needed always use boiling water, adding cold water will ruin anything.

March 2, 1944 - The Academy awards are presented for the first time, as a variety show. Hosted by Jack Benny, the ceremony took place at Graumans Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. The program was broadcast locally, due to a lack of national interest. Awards were presented to Bing Crosby, best actor for his male lead in the picture Going My Way, which won best film. Ingrid Bergman won best actress for her performance in Gaslight.

Legend has it that most of the women in my family were Cherokee. Tracing them has proved almost impossible. Any idea as to the origin of the first name Armieo? My great-great grandmother Armieo Lowe was born 1812 in N.C. Family called her Anny or Anna.

I tried the Carmel or (Caramel) Cake and Icing! It is fabulous! The only change I will make on the next cake, is to double the icing. The icing covered between layers and on top. It was so good I needed more of that great Carmel Icing.

This is a copy of a correspondence from Milton Long to FTW:

The Cook and Bakers School was at Post Headquarters Area. This was called the “Armored Forces School.” It included Signal, Mechanics, and other support training. I worked with Lt. John Harley who was in charge of the Motorcycle School.

When I was at Post HQ I would eat in the enlisted students mess. They used the students from the Cook and Bakers School to work in this mess as on the job training.

12 egg yolks

1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder

8 tablespoons sugar

vanilla

flour-until stiff.

Directions: Roll out very thin. Cut into strips. Cut a slit in the middle (of the strip) and pull one end thru. Fry in hot oil. Fry one side and then the other side.

This is the story about my sister Shirley Glory (nee Wagaman).

•Whenever you return a borrowed pie pan, make sure it's got a warm pie in it.

•Make home a happy place for the children. Everybody returns to their happy place.

•Always keep a small light on in the kitchen window at night.

•It's a whole lot easier to get breakfast from a chicken than a pig.

•Always pat the chickens when you take their eggs.

•Biscuits brown better with a little butter brushed on 'em.

•Check your shoelaces before runnin' to help somebody.

My great-grandmother was French. She was born approximately in 1899, in France. My great-grandfather was Romanian like me. He worked for almost 30 years for Romanian Crown Estate being a wealthy man, having business and traveling a lot in the West of Europe. It is said about him that he spoke besides Romanian, French, English, Latin and German.

Growing up, I used to spend the summers with my grandparents, Warren and Marion Hostetter. They had a small truck patch type farm consisting of around 10 acres in Mishawaka, Indiana. The main reason I spent my summers with them, was to help out on the farm and while those years created some great memories, I think my favorite memories involve the time I spent in Grandmas Kitchen. My grandmother was ALWAYS cleaning fresh vegetables and canning them. She was a fantastic cook and I still miss the great foods she used to make.

One day I ran into a stranger as he passed by, "Oh excuse me please" was my reply.

He said, "Please excuse me too; I wasn't watching for you."

We were very polite, this stranger and I. We went on our way and we said goodbye.

But at home a different story is told, How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, cooking the evening meal, My son stood beside me very still. When I turned, I nearly knocked him down. "Move out of the way," I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken. I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.
